How To Prepare For Moving Day

So you’ve made the decision to hire a local moving company.  Great choice – you’ve just alleviated yourself from one of the most stressful parts of relocating.  Now you no longer have to worry about lifting that heavy dresser, moving awkward mattresses, or blowing out your back, but there are a few things that you can, and should, do to prepare for moving day.  In this month’s blog, the professional movers at New Roots share a few tips to help you save time and money on moving day.

Packing Your Belongings

If you’ve decided to box your own belongings use high-quality moving boxes, packing peanuts, and/or bubble wrap to protect your belongings.  And make sure to use good packing tape to securely seal your moving boxes. After everything is boxed up, here’s what will help save time; make sure to clearly label your boxes by the room they’re going to so the movers know exactly where to put them.  Believe it or not, this detail is often overlooked, but it really helps the movers efficiently load the moving trucks and quickly place them at their new destination.  Since most movers charge by the hour, this may help save you a little money, too.

That said, did you know New Roots Moving Company offers packing services?  If you so desire we will professionally pack your belongings so you’ll have one less thing to worry about.

Preparing Your Appliances

While professional movers are happy to move just about anything in your home, they are not typically licensed to perform tasks involving modifications to plumbing, electrical, or gas lines, therefore it’s the responsibility of the homeowner to disconnect the appliance utility lines before moving day.  New Roots recommends referencing the appliance owner’s manual as they often have specific sections just for moving preparations.  If you can’t find the hard copy, try a quick Google search that includes the brand name and “owners manual”.  If that doesn’t work, or you’re still not comfortable, we recommend reaching out to a licensed technician. One of our favorites is Canton’s top-rated appliance repair company, Sam’s Appliance Repair (make sure to tell him New Roots sent you:).

After your appliances are properly disconnected, remove all food from your refrigerator, defrost the freezer, and drain the washing machine.  The moving team should be able to take it from there.

Final Preparations & Tips

When the big day is finally here, these final few tips can help you out even more:

  • Make sure the driveway is clear and there’s space for the moving trucks to get as close to your home as possible. Our trucks are approximately 13’6” tall so if you’ve got overhanging branches please try to remove them if possible.

  • If you have very valuable items like cash, jewelry, or family heirlooms, we recommend you pack and move them yourself just to be extra cautious.

  • If your dressers are sturdy and well built, you can leave your clothing in the drawers.

  • And last, but not least, there’s no better way to thank our hard-working movers than with a cash tip. Generally speaking, $4-6 per hour, per mover is considered generous. New Roots puts a lot of time and effort into hiring and training the best movers in Canton, so if you’re satisfied with the services our movers provide a tip good goes a long way.
